Wallis's Mega Carnival – A Family Tradition Spanning Generations

Behind the bright lights, thrilling rides, and laughter lies a remarkable family history stretching back hundreds of years.

During a visit to Wallis's Mega Carnival, I had the pleasure of speaking with Trevor Smith, an 11th-generation showman whose family has spent generations travelling the fairgrounds of Britain. While quietly painting one of the fair's wagons, Trevor shared stories passed down through his family, giving a fascinating glimpse into the heritage of travelling showmen.

Trevor explained that the traditions of the fair run deep through both sides of his family. Among his ancestors are members of the Day family, who, according to family history, served as jesters in the royal court. Some family members had dwarfism, a characteristic Trevor recalls with good humour as part of his own family's story.

His family connections extend through generations of travelling fairs, with photographs of his grandfather, Alf Burton, operating a fair in Glasgow's Sauchiehall Street during the 1970s providing a wonderful reminder of a bygone era.

The tradition continues today. Trevor's children, including Kristan and Roxy, represent the 12th generation of their family to work in the fairground business, ensuring that skills, knowledge and traditions continue to be passed from one generation to the next.

Also featured is Graeme Codona, who comes from another long-established showman's family and proudly represents the seventh generation of fairground operators. Together, their stories highlight the rich heritage of Britain's travelling fairs and the dedication of the families who keep these traditions alive.

Wallis's Mega Carnival is far more than a collection of rides and attractions. It is part of a living history built by generations of families whose lives have revolved around bringing entertainment to towns and cities across the country.

The interviews featured here have been recorded in the relaxed surroundings of the fair itself, preserving the voices and memories of the people behind the attractions. They offer a rare opportunity to hear the stories of those who have devoted their lives to one of Britain's oldest travelling traditions.
